Romantic Althofen
Althofen lies in the heart of a sunny, hilly landscape blessed with a mild southern climate. Many decades ago, visitors travelled to this health resort to spend their summers in the mountains.
It is worth taking a stroll through the romantic old town to admire its medieval buildings and charming alleyways. Discover the nearby Krappfeld with the unique Natura 2000 European protected area Mannsberg-Boden on a bike or e-bike tour. Of the now almost 150 protected areas in Carinthia, this is by far the largest spatially connected protected area outside the high alpine zone at just under 7 km² (683 ha) and is a showcase project for the whole of Austria. The site is not just unique because of its size, but also because of the quality of the flora and fauna. It is home to 19 protected orchids as well as beech forest habitats that are rare throughout Europe. The Alpine longhorn beetle and the Russian bear butterfly are two animal species whose conservation is of great interest.
Along the walking and hiking trails, you can stop and rest at one of the delightful "Buschenschänken" wine taverns serving authentic Carinthian delicacies.
The range of leisure activities on offer includes hiking, cycling, swimming, golfing, inline hockey and skating, horse riding and tennis in summer. In winter, you can enjoy skiing, tobogganing, cross-country skiing, ice skating, snowshoe hiking or winter hiking in the nearby ski resorts.
